Robert Poindexter Munday was born in Lynchburg Virginia in 1903. His Father Cary Poindexter Munday and his mother Kate V. Munday were both born in Virginia. Robert is the youngest of six kids but only two of them were living when he was born. Roberts' two other living siblings were Wilkens Munday and Ruby Munday. They were both a bit older than him. Wilkens was fifteen years older than Robert. Ruby was eleven years older than him. The big age gap makes me think that his siblings who passed away were possibly over the eleven years between Robert and his older siblings. His mom passed away at a young age of forty-nine. His father remarried shortly after to Mina Crank Munday. Growing up Robert and his family lived off of Bedford Avenue. Robert went to school when he was younger and was able to read and write however he dropped out of school in the sixth grade. A few years later he started working at a factory as an assistant cutter. At the age of twenty-one he got married to Nancie D. Munday. They moved to a house off of riverside drive. At this point in his life he was working as a clerk. He was a vet for World War I and World War II. On his gravestone it says that he was a CMAM for the U.S. Navy. This stands for Chief Mailman for the U.S. Navy. The chief mailman was an established ranking in November of 1944. The chief mailman was in charge of sorting and delivering packages in the naval post offices. There were two naval post offices. One was in San Francisco and the other was in New York City. Although Robert could have been chief at one of these, there is also the Navy Annex at Arlington VA. This was the final resort stop for mail that did not have the correct address to be sorted through. Because there is no record of Robert leaving Virginia it is very likely that he was the chief at the Navy Annex at Arlington. There is not much information on his time as CMAM other than it being on his gravestone. He is buried in the same plot as some of his family. Some of his family has the last name Crank which is from his step mom's side of the family. William A. Crank, who is buried right by him, was also a vet of World War I. By the time Robert was thirty-six years old he and his wife Nancie had gotten a divorce and he had moved into a home that he was renting in downtown Lynchburg. There isn't much information on the later years of Robert's life. There are no records of him remarrying or having any kids. He passed away on November 5th, 1979 at the age of seventy-four.
